Rushton Hurley has worked and studied on three continents as a Japanese language teacher, principal of a charter high school, teacher trainer, educational technology researcher, and school reform consultant.  He founded and is executive director of the educational nonprofit Next Vista for Learning, which houses a free library of hundreds of short videos by and for teachers and students at http://NextVista.org.

At Stanford University his graduate research included using speech recognition technology with beginning students of Japanese in computer-based role-playing scenarios for developing language skills.  In the 1990’s his work with teenagers at a high school in San José led him to begin using internet and video technologies to make learning more active, helping him reach students who had struggled under more traditional approaches.  Rushton has trained teachers around the world, and regularly presents at national and international conferences.  His fun and thoughtful talks and workshops focus on helping participants find the fun and confidence associated with exploring new technologies.

Tuesday Spotlight Talk

Technology, Global Possibilities, and Why We Do What We Do
Teaching can be exciting, tedious, thrilling, infuriating, and sometimes even appreciated.  Above all, though, it is deeply personal.  With the tools now at our fingertips, we can connect our students and ourselves with peers everywhere, exploring new possibilities, and sidestepping the potholes of isolation and negativity.  Join Rushton for an exploration of how we can improve our campuses, classrooms, and professional exploration, and even enjoy the process, as he guides us on where to take what we’ve learned as part of VSTE 2013.

Rushton will also be presenting two breakout sessions.

Thanks to ABS Technology Architects and Barracuda Networks for their support of Rushton’s appearance at VSTE2013
