Pre Conference Sessions

  • We are pleased to offer five pre-conference sessions focused on the use of iPads in the classroom. Each session will be hands on and led by content area experts. Participants should plan to bring their own device. Limited to 25 people, these sessions will give you an opportunity to explore in depth in a small group setting. Each session is just $25. They will be held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center on Sunday, December 2, 2012, from 8:30 to 11:30 AM.

    iKnowledge in the Library with iPads

    Presenter: Norene Skiles, Virginia Beach City Public Schools

    Learn how iPads are used in one Elementary Library and develop some learning activities of your own. We will work through some of the apps as students and then you can create a lesson or lesson sample using Choiceboard, QR Code Treasure Hunt, or Scribble Press. Prior to the class, please install the following FREE apps: Easy QR (or some other QR code reader), ChoiceBoard Creator, a dictionary app, Edmodo, and Scribble Press.

     

    Math Fun With iPads

    Presenter: Bea Cantor, Goochland County Public Schools

    From early elementary to high school, there are many possibilities for using iPads in math classrooms. Bring your iPad and have some fun as Bea Cantor, ITRT from Goochland County Public School, shares apps, websites, and lesson ideas focusing on math skills. Make tutorials, draw beautiful pictures, play games with mental math, and leave this workshop with a great collection of resources.

This session will cover the how-tos of a Novel Study, from annotations to activities, Digital Portfolio possibilities and classroom management tips to get you started. We will explore iPad applications to support:

    Going Mobile in the Science Classroom

    Presenter: Anita Harris, Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools

    In light of tight budgets and financial constraints on schools, teachers are looking for innovative ways to use mobile technologies in their classroom along with other tech and collaborative tools. This session will focus on how to use your own mobile devices in the classroom along with students as well. The focus will be on Science and STEM, but may also be used across other content areas as well. Attendees will also learn how to effectively present in the classroom using mobile devices with some low-cost presentation solutions. Specific apps will be shared for both the teacher and students to learn and use as well as digital content from iTunes, iBooks, Google Play and Google Books. So, be prepared to learn, share and play!
